According to Chinese customs statistics, in 2023, China imported over 1.425923 tons of fresh durian, valued at approximately $6716 billion, an increase of 72.87% compared to 2022. China ranks first in the number of fresh durians imported from Thailand, with a total of 928976 tons and an import value of approximately 4.566 billion US dollars, accounting for 65.15% of the total import volume. Vietnam ranks second with an import quantity of 493183 tons and an import value of approximately 2.137 billion US dollars, accounting for 34.59% of the total import volume. In recent years, the enthusiasm of Chinese consumers for durian has not diminished, and the market is in short supply. Previously, Malaysia mainly exported frozen durians to China. Chen's Sunshine has been importing frozen Cat Mountain King durian from Malaysia for many consecutive years, bringing high-quality durian fruits to consumer dining tables.

On June 24th, the General Administration of Customs issued a notice on the recommended requirements for importing fresh durian plants from Malaysia, allowing the import of Malaysian fresh durians that meet the relevant requirements. Malaysia began exporting frozen durian fruit pulp products to China in 2011, and was granted permission to export frozen whole fruits in 2018. It was officially exported in May 2019. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia in 2024, the two sides officially signed the Malaysia Fresh Durian Import Protocol to China on June 20th.

Last year, China imported about 90000 containers of durian, of which about 60000 containers came from Thailand and 20000 from Vietnam. Other countries such as Malaysia and the Philippines only accounted for 10% of the Chinese durian market. Now fresh durians from Malaysia have been granted access, and it is expected that the export volume to China will also increase significantly.

Malaysia is located in a tropical rainforest climate zone, with sufficient precipitation and abundant heat energy, providing a unique environment for the growth of durian. Malaysia has a long history of planting durians and is one of the high-quality production areas in the world that is more suitable for durian growth. Malaysia's Cat Mountain King durian has conquered the taste buds of many people with its unique taste of sweet, mellow, and rich flavor.

According to Malaysian media reports, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Malaysia, recently revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is currently planning to apply for a patent for the Cat Mountain King durian in order to gain international recognition for its identity as a local breed in Malaysia. The Bureau of Agriculture and International Commerce, which is under the jurisdiction of the department, will be responsible for implementing this recommendation. After passing the biosafety test, Malaysia's fresh durian exports to China will be launched in September or at the latest in October.
