The share of Vietnamese durian exports to China has grown strongly, and the average price of imported durian in Thailand has declined.

According to the General Administration of Customs of Vietnam, in the first seven months of 2024, all durian products were exported to 476130 tons, worth 1.6 billion US dollars (about 11.4 billion yuan), up 50.5 percent and 49.4 percent respectively from last year, accounting for 42 percent of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable exports in the first seven months of this year. Behind the strong growth is the strong demand drive of the Chinese market, especially the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, which provides a good opportunity for the sales of Vietnamese durian in China.

In August this year, Vietnam signed an agreement on the export of frozen durian to China, which opened a new turning point for the industry and further promoted the sustainable development of the durian industry. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, the export value of durian in Vietnam this year will reach 30-3.5 billion US dollars (about 213.6-24.9 billion yuan), and frozen durian will be about 4-0.5 billion US dollars (about 28.5-3.56 billion yuan).

Although Vietnamese durian was allowed to be exported to China later than Thai durian, its market share in my country is growing. According to the Import and Export Department of Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the first half of this year, the price of imported durian from China reached US $4760 per ton (about 34000 yuan), down 2.3 percent from the same period last year. Among them, the average price of durian imported from Vietnam and Malaysia has increased, and the average price of durian imported from Thailand has declined.

Vietnam is located in the tropics, abundant precipitation and sufficient heat, provides a good environment for the growth of durian. The supply of durian in most countries is seasonal, while Vietnamese durian can be supplied all year round, which is a big advantage. At the same time, the production cost of durian in Vietnam is lower, and the transportation distance to my country is shorter than that of Thailand, so it can reach the domestic market faster.
